What’d Happen If You Don’t Care About Valentine’s Day? Single-Day Gestures And Real Love In Practice

Here is a question to think about: just for a moment imagine what is going to happen if you don’t care about Valentine’s Day? Of course, the answer is obvious: nothing’s going to happen. But from the way people are going on and on about it, you’d think it’s blasphemy if you don’t care about Valentine’s Day.

Many people, especially the ladies, would be shocked anybody would consider ignoring such important day. After all, it is supposed to be the one day lovers renew their vows, or show how much they love each other by doing something extra special.

Naturally, nobody in their right senses would miss the opportunity to show love. And Valentine’s Day is not simply about your lover or partner. It is also a day to show how much you care for family, friends and your favourite charity.

It is nice that some people are thoughtful enough to take gifts to homeless kids. Now, who would argue against the awesomeness of something like that?

However, in the majority of the cases, Valentine’s Day is about hanging out with your partner and/or getting a special gift for them to mark the day. Herein lies the issue of what would happen if you don’t care about Valentine’s day.

Evolution of Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day started as a celebration to honor the humble priest, Valentine, who became a cult hero for performing weddings for soldiers. According to the legend, these soldiers were forbidden to get married according to the law. So it was a courageous thing to break the law for the sake of love.

It seems the idea of referring to somebody as your Val came as a result of the letter St Valentine wrote to a girl before he was executed. The girl was the daughter of the judge who tried him.

He had cured her of her blindness so a special relationship had developed between them. In the letter, he signed it off with the words, ‘Your Valentine.’

Those two words have now come to represent an expression of true love especially on Val’s Day.

Ignoring St Valentine’s Day

First off, it is hard not to be aware of the Val’s Day. Worldwide, a multi-billion dollar industry has grown around it. The ads on TV, radio and online in the days leading up to February 14 are so relentless. They are right in your face.

Even, people you never expect to bother with it are falling in line and finding reasons to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

But why pick a single day to celebrate your love? What about the other 364 days of the year? Are you going to use just one day to make up for all the other days you refuse to show love to your partner? Is February 14 turning into a ‘get-out-of-jail-card’ for people who don’t know when and how to show love consistently?

To be sure though, businesses make a lot of money in gifts and events planned for that day.

If you don’t care about Valentine’s Day, there are certain immediate benefits to you. For instance:

  • You won’t have to waste money on expensive Val’s Day gift for your loved one
  • You won’t have to waste time and energy planning a special Val outing
  • You can concentrate on the important stuff in your daily routine like work or studies

The other side of the coin goes something like this: only broke ass guys want to dodge their responsibility on Valentine’s Day.

Basically, if you don’t have money to spend or you are one stingy person, you would come up with any excuse not to do want is expected. At least, you would embrace anything that involves not spending money.

That could be true to a certain extent. But how about not celebrating Valentine’s Day for all the right reasons.

You don’t care about Valentine’s Day for the right reasons

you don't care about Valentine's Day

The year is still young. You can use Valentine’s Day to make a commitment to yourself to consistently demonstrate affection to your partner. The operative words are, ‘commitment to yourself.‘ it is almost like making a Val’s Day resolution to yourself.

The point of the resolution is to make sure you never take your lover for granted all year long. And:

  • You can buy gifts for them at anytime
  • You can plan surprise dates and outings any day of the year
  • Always demonstrate the degree of your commitment to the relationship
  • Do whatever it takes to make your partner special all year long

Now, it doesn’t need a special day to do all that. And it has nothing to do with whether you are broke, stingy or the richest person on the block. Real love is about consistency and long lasting relationships are based on hard work and a determination to make sure it works.

You really don’t need a single day to remind you to do your duty to the love of your life. That, basically, is the reason you don’t have to care about Valentine’s Day.

For all the lovers who would be celebrating Valentine’s Day, here is wishing you all the best. Please, show some love by liking our Facebook page or even follow us on Twitter if you haven’t done so already.
