5 Common Makeup Mistakes And How To Fix Them
We have all been there…that moment when you decide to go through your old pictures in a moment of boredom, when you cringe because you wonder how you ever selected that skirt to go with that top, and oh the shoes! But when your eyes stray from your clothes to look at your face, you could literally slap yourself with embarrassment!
Makeup is like a kitchen knife. When used perfectly, it can help to ‘slay’ a look and when used wrongly, leaves in its wake a frustrated and bland looking canvas for a face.
Even though we might not be able to apply makeup like the Kim Kardashian’s of this world, you can at least avoid the following makeup mistakes.
1. Dirty brushes
Many people apply makeup to cover up blemishes in order to create that smooth look. However, when you use brushes, on your face, that haven’t been washed in a month, you fulfil the opposite of your goal.
These dirty brushes contain bacteria which get transferred to your face and create additional spots which will in turn make you opt for using more makeup to cover up these spots thereby creating a cycle of frustration.
To avoid creating additional problems for yourself with your makeup, ensure that you wash your makeup brushes at least once a week and dry them out properly.
2. Wrong shade of foundation/powder
This is another common error that sadly even some self-proclaimed makeup artistes make. Using a shade of foundation or powder that is either too light or dark will not create that perfect finish you.
To avoid this, you can request for a recommendation when next you go buy your foundation/powder. Most of these recommendations come for free and will be given to you willingly and you can even be advised on the perfect product to use for your foundation or powder.
If you do not have the time to visit a cosmetics store to ask for a recommendation from the experts, then you can test it out yourself. Get about 3 shades of foundation and apply on your arms. The makeup that blends perfectly with your skin without evidence of product is your perfect shade.
3. Too much blush
From personal experience, I can tell you that if you make this mistake, it will not be pleasant on the eyes. Therefore, to avoid looking like someone who just got slapped by the Holyghost on both cheeks, avoid applying too much blush.
Blush is meant to bring some colour to your skin and you can only do that when you apply it lightly by starting from the apple of your cheek to your temple.
4. Overly drawn eyebrows
The craze to get the perfect eyebrows drove many people to start trying out different techniques including using black pencil to draw their brows, over thickening their brows with pencil, etc.
Instead of opting for those methods, make sure you select a dark brown or light brown pencil based on personal preference or recommendation from a cosmetic expert. Before filling out your brows, make sure to outline it, and then begin lightly filling out your brows to create that perfect shape.
5. Not blending to the neck
Seeing makeup stop at one’s chin is probably one of the funniest things I see every day. Please make sure you blend your foundation and powder to cover your face right down to your neck and chest if it is going to be exposed.
This will help you not to have two different shades; your normal skin colour and your makeup colour.
